Most of the times, when the price is cheap, it can be too good to be true. But not with Chon Siam Thai Restaurant.

Located in Central, you’ll find that it’s tucked away 2 streets away from the city centre. Whilst most people will walk past this plain restaurant, it has a lot to offer.

Many Thai natives (especially students) love to visit this authentic restaurant. They are known for their cheap $6 boat noodle soups (a couple of years ago, this was as cheap as $4!).

One thing you do need to curb, is your expectation of the size of this bowl. It is a small portion, and the price reflects that.

Despite that, this authentic little bowl is packed with flavours!

The pork broth is very rich and flavourful. There is a sweetness to the broth which some may find too sweet for themselves, but is otherwise perfect. (Add some chilli or vinegar to it, if you do find it too sweet). The spice also really come through, especially in the noodles.

There are a few slices of beef or pork dependant on what you order, and some green veggies adding some crunch factor to it.

This may be a small bowl, but given the depth of the broth and authenticity, it is well worth the $6! However, it should be noted that you may find the portion small, so you might have to roder another bowl or dish, and that’s what we did.

Aside from their must-order boat noodle soup, we also tried other dishes that were equally as cheap.

The soft shell crab noodles is priced at $11.50 (might have increased slightly due to inflation). It’s cooked with pad thai flavours and added with deep-fried crabs. Much like Chon Siam’s boat noodle soup, the pad thai is also packed with flavours, again with a hint of sweetness. It is slightly cut through with the chilli-jam. However, we added extra chilli flakes to give it more of a kick. The bean sprouts add a lovely crunch to noodles and giving it a different flavour. The egg is coated well with the pad thai sauce. The dish really comes together.

The soft shell crab was cooked nicely, however, it isn’t the freshest and meatiest crab out there, which of course is reflected in the price (we’re not complaining).

WOULD I COME BACK?

Absolutely! To find an authentic Thai restaurant that is also great value in the city is hard. This is a must-try when you’re in the area. The boat noodle soup is something you have to order when you’re at the restaurant, it’s their signature dish.

It’s perfect for lunch if you work in the city. You won’t be breaking the bank on this one. The staff is also very lovely. They do accept card as well.

Already thinking about coming back for another bowl of noodle soup!
