Edomae Sushi, Burwood

Does this Japanese eatery stand out amongst the sea of Chinese restaurants in Burwood? It’s a tad pricey but is it worth it?

THE PRICE

Edomae Sushi is unlike other sushi train restaurants. They’re essentially structured like a sushi restaurant but with premium pricing.

If you’re an el cheapo, then one of the things you’d look for in a sushi restaurant is the price per plate. Most sushi train restaurants will start from $2.50, and the pricing ranges from anywhere between $2.50 to $8.00. Other places will have a flat price of $3.50.

At Edomae Sushi, the flat price for the sushi plates are $3.95 (higher than most places). However, items outside of sushi, are priced individually and are quite reasonable.

Edomae Sushi Burwood Menu

We had 2 people and 10 dishes (mixed of sushi plates and also individual items such as Udon noodles, chicken karaage and etc.). The total bill came to $56.38.

Overall, we found that the items outside of the sushi menu were reasonably priced. The sushi items are higher pricing than other restaurants. There were also sushi items that weren’t part of the standard of $3.95 pricing as these were more premium. But is the food with the price? Read on, my friend.

THE FOOD

Let’s talk about the sushi first. After all, this is a sushi restaurant.

If you order through the IPAD and ordered a number of sushi dishes, you can expect to receive them in this lovely sushi board, beautifully presented with additional quality wasabi rather than the cheap wasabi packets.

Edomae Sushi – Sushi Board

We ordered an array of sushi dishes that will allow us to trial different methods of cooking and showcase Edomae Sushi’s skills.

They were all delicious and none of them disappointed. All ingredients were incredibly fresh and tasty.

The salmon was fresh and seared perfectly, and so was the beef. The sushi rice was well-seasoned.

The crab miso sushi was unusual as we haven’t tried this at other sushi eateries before. If you love the strong ‘seafood/ocean’ taste, then this would be the one for you.

When you taste the dishes, you’re able to tell that this is all freshly cooked today, none of the ingredients have been sitting there for a while or prepared the night before.

The sushi is priced higher than other sushi restaurants, and rightly so, as this is the sort of restaurant that values high quality food with authentic flavours. There is a good variety of sushi with different kinds of raw fish.

You won’t find California rolls or ‘rainbow’ or ‘volcano’ rolls here, or even sushi filled with cream cheese as they are catered more towards western palettes.

We also tried items outside of the sushi menu.

Much like the quality of the sushi, the udon was just as delicious. The udon noodle soup is clear, and broth is subtle. The key difference between the udon noodle soup from Edomae Sushi and other places, is that while the soup is subtle, it is not bland – And that’s what makes this delicious (To add to this, i’m not one to normally order udon noodle soups as i typically find them plain).

We also ordered the chicken karaage and soft shell crab handroll.

The chicken karaage came out hot and fresh. When you take a bite of it, you almost need to put it back down because it was sizzling and juices bursting out! Unlike the standard sushi franchises, these are made to order and the chicken had not been frozen prior to being fried. There is also some fat pieces that make this chicken extra juicy and flavourful.

The soft shell crab handroll was also freshly fried and hot when it arrived. Again, fresh crab here, it definitely wasn’t frozen and then fried. The rice was nice and warm, and it had a spicy mayo sauce to tie the rice and the crab together. The cucumber gave it a nice and refreshing crunch to the otherwise heavy handroll.

Overall, the food quality here has been solid. The pricing for these food quality was justified, especially items outside of the sushi menu as they were reflected prices you’d expect from other sushi restaurants.

THE VIBE

From the outside of the restaurant, you can see that Edomae Sushi has placed a lot of efforts to enhancing the Japanese sushi experience by choosing warm yellow lighting and uses of wood in the interior to reflect the minimalist Japanese culture.

Inside is very lively, and you have the chefs yelling across to the waiters and waitresses when items are completed. They greet their customers when they sit in front of the sushi trains. It’s a very relaxing atmosphere and there isn’t a rush to leave despite the long lines outside!

THE SERVICE

The restaurant opens at 12pm and by the time you get there, there is normally a number of people outside of the restaurant with queueing and waiting for their number to be called out. This could probably be improved by having a text message service to let you know when you number is close, so you don’t have to stand there and wait.

The staff is friendly, and will ensure tables are wiped down before calling you in. There is an iPAD whether you’re in front of the sushi train or seated at tables so ordering food is very easy, and requires very minimal staff interactions. If you did want to speak to staff, there is a button on the iPAD that allows you to call them over gracefully without trying to maintain an awkward eye contact or embarrassingly waving them down.

The food comes out very quickly which is great if you’ve been in the queue for some time and is absolutely starving!

When you want the bill, you can easily call a staff over for a ticket so that you can take this up to the counter in the front and pay. The whole process is quite streamlined and efficient.

WOULD I COME BACK?

Absolutely! Although we should preface, this isn’t a cheap eats spot, but the pricing for the high quality food is justified.

We’d recommend coming here once in a while if you’re catching up with a friend who you’ve not seen in a long time. We wouldn’t recommend this as a frequent spot (unless you really love the food and want to keep coming back). As a matter of fact, after visiting it the first time, 2 days later, I visited here again with another friend as they were also a sushi lover.

I would not recommend this place, if your company is not a huge fan of seafood or sushi (i’m talking about those friends who order ‘California rolls’ as their go-to orders in a sushi restaurant). The sushi game here is strong and authentic. There is a huge variety of raw fish with their sushi. If someone is not typically a fan of sushi or seafood, they might struggle to find an item they’d like from the sushi menu.

P.S. You get 10% off if you pay by cash!
